Beaches are improving, say Green Action

Beach Clean Volunteers note a dramatic reduction in amount of waste at Westcliff Beach.

At the recent Westcliff Beach Clean on the 18th November 2017, a significant improvement was noted by the volunteers.

The event, co-hosted by Green Action, Southend Beachcare Group, and Surfers Against Sewage, saw volunteers from across the borough battle the poor weather to clean the beach of litter and micro-plastics.

Despite nearly twenty volunteers, just one bag of rubbish was collected, with the majority of collections being cigarette ends.
This was a dramatic improvement over the situation just a year ago, where many sacks of refuse were collected from the small section of beach.

Green Action Officer, Paul Mansfield commented that
The Beach cleans are obviously working! The beach was much better, with very little micro-plastics around.
